The Brilliant Why

Dentistry Was Always Around Me. Service Was, Too.
The Story Behind Brilliant Denture & Implant Studio

I grew up in dentistry.

My dad was a dentist with a particular passion for prosthetics, the same part of dentistry I would eventually fall in love with myself. He built his practice in Salem, Oregon, where he and my mom raised our family, but to him, being a dentist was always about much more than teeth.

His father was a veteran, so caring for veterans was especially meaningful to him. He believed they deserved our attention, our respect, and our care. And as a dentist, he understood how fundamental his role could be: helping someone eat comfortably, smile confidently, and enjoy life.

Dad was also a Loma Linda–trained dentist, where service and mission dentistry were deeply woven into his education. He learned early in his career that dentistry didn't always have to happen inside a dental office. The same principles that allowed dentists to bring care into remote communities through mission work could also be used to care for people who had difficulty getting to a dental office at home.

And that's exactly what he did.

I remember going with him on house calls to care for veterans who couldn't easily come into his practice. I would be his assistant, carrying impression putty and a lab knife into someone's home while he took impressions, worked on dentures, and figured out how to provide the care they needed with what we could bring with us.

At the time, I don't think I understood how much those experiences were shaping me.

I was simply helping my dad.

Years later, I would realize he had shown me something that would become central to my own career: sometimes providing good care means finding a way to bring the care to the patient.

My mom was quietly teaching me the same lesson from another side of healthcare. She spent her career in home health nursing and genuinely loved going into people's homes to care for them when receiving care somewhere else wasn't easy - or sometimes wasn't possible.

My two greatest influences had chosen different professions, but they were teaching me the same thing:

Access matters.

The Idea Came Before the Dental Degree

In 2016, I began working on an idea for a mobile dental business called Brilliant Dental Services.

At the time, I wasn't a dentist. I was finishing my MBA and using everything I was learning to develop a business plan around an idea that, looking back, had probably been forming for much longer than I realized:

What if we could bring dentistry to people who couldn't easily get to a dental office?

Somewhere in the middle of all that planning, I experienced the pivotal moment that changed everything.

I remember brainstorming, throwing my pen onto the table, sitting back in my chair and saying:

“I think I have to be a dentist.”

I realized I didn't just want to build the business.

I wanted to be at the heart of the service. I wanted to be the person providing the care.

So, at 30 years old, I went back to school.

What followed was the long process of completing the prerequisites, getting into dental school and, as I like to say, getting out alive.

But through all of it, I never let go of that original idea.

Brilliant, Full Circle

Today, that idea has finally come full circle.

At Brilliant Denture & Implant Studio in Placentia, California, I get to practice the part of dentistry I inherited a love for: prosthetics, restorative dentistry, and the craftsmanship that goes into giving someone back their smile and their ability to function comfortably.

And through Brilliant At Home, I get to fulfill the other half of that vision - bringing thoughtful, high-quality dental care directly to people who may have difficulty accessing it otherwise.

I don't believe patients should have to choose between access and quality.

The care provided in someone's home should carry the same thoughtfulness, clinical standards, and attention to detail that I would expect inside my own practice.

Maybe that's why Brilliant At Home feels less like something new and more like something I've been working toward for most of my life.

My dad taught me what dentistry could give someone.

My mom taught me the value of meeting people where they are.

And together, they taught me the principles that continue to guide Brilliant today:

Quality of care matters.
Access matters.
And I believe our patients deserve both.

I can't wait for the opportunity to care for you or someone you love.
